Williams agrees to play in Spain
Golden State Warriors free-agent forward Reggie Williams has signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with Caja Laboral Vitoria of the Spanish ACB League, Williams’ agent told Yahoo! Sports.
The deal includes a $1 million buyout if Williams wants to return to the NBA this season. Under the NBA’s previous collective bargaining agreement, NBA teams could contribute up to $500,000 to buy out a player’s overseas contract.
Williams, who averaged 9.2 points in 20 minutes a game for the Warriors, is a restricted free agent. After Golden State signed Williams out of the NBA Developmental League, he averaged 15 points over the final 20 games of the 2009-10 season.
“While Reggie’s dream of playing in the NBA is our primary focus, we think playing in the ACB will put him in a situation to be a sought-after free agent upon his return from Spain,” said Ron Shade, who represents Williams along with agent Herb Rudoy.
The Warriors offered Williams a qualifying offer in June, and were expected to seek a multiyear contract extension with him. Several teams have targeted Williams as a capable scorer to come off the bench. After leading the country in scoring at Virginia Military Institute as a junior and senior, Williams went undrafted in 2008 before playing his rookie season in France.
