Romero sees rivalry with SMB
MANILA, Philippines — San Miguel Beer’s entry in the ASEAN Basketball League will spur the Philippine Patriots to field a strong team when the league’s third season unfolds in January, according to co-owner Mikee Romero.
Romero, the Harbour Centre boss, sees a “friendly rivalry” with the Beermen when the Patriots try to regain their crown they won in the first season of the league.
SMC boss Ramon Ang, whom Romero considers a mentor and idol, disclosed during Wednesday’s press conference that it was the Patriots’ co-owner that invited him to join the region’s fledging basketball league.
“Mr. Ang is one person I look up to, but when our players play against each other, matira na ang matibay. But I just want to stress that it’s going to be a friendly rivalry,” said Romero.
Although San Miguel tryouts won’t begin until next month, there are already reports that 6-foot-10 center June Mar Fajardo of University of Cebu is being eyed by the club.
Fajardo, who had numerous battles with former University of the Visayas star and debuting Ateneo center Greg Slaughter in past, will play his last year with UC and is being eyed by some to join the PBA draft.
But if that fails to materialize, there’s a possibility for the talented Cebuano, known for his low post moves and passing skills, to ply his trade in the ABL.
“Knowing the resources of San Miguel, I’m very sure it will also put up a very competitive team, so we don’t want to be left behind. Being a No. 2 team is not an option for us,” said Romero, who co-owns the team with businessman Tony Boy Cojuangco.
