Gilas to have 10-man roster in SEABA Championship
Pilipinas-Smart Gilas will only have a 10-man roster when it competes in the 9th Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Championship on June 23 to 26 at the BritAma Arena in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Gilas will play minus veteran big man Asi Taulava and the hot shooting Dondon Hontiveros as well as collegiate standouts 6-foot-11 Greg Slaughter and 6-foot-6 Aldrech Ramos.
Taulava (Merlaco Bolts) and Hontiveros (Air21 Express) opted to play for their mother clubs in the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governors Cup, while Slaughter (Ateneo Blue Eagles) and Ramos (Far Eastern University Tamaraws) chose to focus on their team’s campaign in the upcoming University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) basketball season.
"They (Taulava and Hontiveros) will rejoin the team only after the third conference of the PBA so they will not be coming to Jakarta," said Toroman, who will also miss the services of Talk ‘N Text’s Kelly Williams and Jimmy Alapag.
With the presence of Taulava and Hontiveros, Gilas made it to the semifinals of the just concluded 22nd FIBA-Asia Champions Cup held at the PhilSports Arena.
Naturalized player Marcus Douthit, 6-foot-11, will lead Gilas coach Rajko Toroman’s 10-man roster that will also have co-team captains Chris Tiu and Mark Barroca, JV Casio, Mac Baracael, Marcio Lassiter, Japeth Aguilar, Filipino-American Chris Lutz, Dylan Ababou and Jason Ballesteros.
But four of the 10 players are slowed down by various injuries and other illnesses with Aguilar and Casio have foot injuries, Lutz has an ailing quadriceps while Ababou is still recovering from high fever.
"Of course, everybody knows our PBA players are not playing so we really have to step up big," said Tiu, who added that the team is eager to win the gold.
"Our ultimate goal is the FIBA-Asia Championship in China where a place in the 2012 London Olympics is at stake," said Toroman.
The Philippines will face Malaysia, coached by former JRU mentor Ariel Vanguardia, on June 23 (Thursday) and host Indonesia the following day (June 24, Friday). They will play Singapore on June 25 (Saturday). – JVP, GMA News
