UAAP to review eligibility criteria of NU's Parks, Ateneo's Slaughter
The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) eligibility committee will meet next week to determine if Bobby Ray Parks of National University and Ateneo's Greg Slaughter can play for their respective schools in Season 74.
UAAP president Ricky Palou of Ateneo said that all teams are required to submit their respective rosters on or before June 24. The lineups will then be reviewed by the eligibility committee led by chairman Lailani Gonzales of University of the Philippines.
"For a period of two to three days, the eligibility committee will review the documents that the schools presented and they will decide which player is eligible," said Palou in Tuesday's Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum.
The team rosters will be finalized when the UAAP Board meets on July 5.
"If there are contentions about eligibility, it will be elevated to the board," added Palou, who is also Ateneo's athletic director.
National University athletic director Junel Baculi remained confident that Parks, son of many-time PBA import Bobby Parks, can play this season.
"It's for the UAAP Board to decide. We will present the documents. It will be up to the board if he is eligible. Hopefully, the board will approve it," Baculi, a multi-titled amateur basketball coach, said in the same forum.
Slaughter's status will also be discussed since there are questions on his eligibility after Ateneo's rookie center also played for Pilipinas-Smart Gilas when the team saw action in the PBA Commissioner's Cup.
Gilas played as a guest team in the 2010-2011 Commissioner's Cup in preparation for the FIBA Asia Championship in September, a 2012 London Olympics qualifier.
Some believe that Slaughter's participation in the PBA is a violation of a UAAP rule that disallows a player, who is still in residency, to play in a commercial league.
Palou said that there have been no formal inquiries about Slaughter's eligibility status.
"He is in (Ateneo's) line-up. All I know is that there are people who have an intention to question the eligibility of Greg. But there have been no formal letters," said Palou.
The UAAP men's basketball season will open on July 9 with games being played the following day.
