Mangahas' buzzer-beating triple dumped Arellano
Allan Mangahas, playing from the bench, hit the game-winning triple at the buzzer to lift the Mapua Cardinals past the Arellano University Chiefs, 73-70, yesterday in the 87th National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Mangahas, who averages 15.4 in his last five games, only had seven points after playing for only 14 minutes, but defied the outstretched hands of Gerald Lapuz to score the winning trey.
The Cardinals thus earned their second victory in six games for sixth place overall.
Mapua trailed by five at the end of the third quarter and battled the Chiefs to four deadlocks in the final frame, the last on a drive by Fil-Palestinian Yousef Taha with 32-5 seconds remaining.
Taha led the Cardinals with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Josan Nimes added 16.
“I needed to put in the second group of the team in the court, and get points from those who hardly contribute. That’s how I adjusted for Arellano today. So, I had Allan come off the bench so he will be the leader of the second group,” said Cardinals coach Chito Victolero.
Prince Caperal and Adrian Celada had 17 points for Arellano, but both were tightly guarded in the fourth quarter, with Caperal fouling out midway in the fourth.
Juniors Game
Francis Abarcar completed a double-double of 27 points and 17 rebounds to lead the defending champion San Beda Red Cubs past Letran, 84-72, in the 87th National Collegiate Athletic Association juniors basketball tournament at the FilOil-Flying V Arena.
The win had the Red Cubs grabbing the solo lead with a 6-0 win-loss card.
Daryl Nazareno added 14, while Van Abatayo chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds for the Red Cubs. The Squires, who drew 15 points and seven rebounds from Aldrin Serafica, dropped to solo fourth at 4-2.
In the other juniors game, Rodolfo Alejandro scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Mapua Red Robins to an 88-74 win over the Arellano University Junior Chiefs.
The Red Robins improved to sixth place at 3-3
