Orcollo topples Immonen in 10-Ball
Manila, Philippines - World No. 1 Dennis Orcollo toppled former world champion Mika Immonen, 8-5, Saturday for a quarterfinal date with world No. 2 Yukio Akagariyama in the 2011 Guinness World Series of Pool 10-Ball Challenge in Jakarta.
Orcollo trailed early on, 3-1, until Immonen, the 2009 10-ball champion, had a miscue in the fifth game, leading to a cleanup by the Filipino and a tied score at 3-3.
The Filipino took the initiative in the succeeding racks, and Immonen was forced to throw in the towel after missing a makeable shot on the No. 9 in the side pocket.
Orcollo, who stayed unbeaten in the tournament, will be in for an interesting match with Akagariyama, the Japanese world No. 2 who scored an 8-4 win over Goh Chin Teck of Singapore.
Roberto Gomez, Jech Limen and Jundel Mazon of the Philippines also moved on by beating Indonesia’s Ari Hartanto, 8-5, Stanza Purba, 8-7, and Bewi Simanjuntak, 8-7, respectively.
Warren Kiamco, however, was not as fortunate as he bowed to 2-7 US Open 9-ball champion Shane Van Boening, 8-4. Also crashing out was Johnny Archer of the United States following an 8-4 loss to Irsal Nasution of Indonesia.
